Ram's History and Legacy

Ram started its life as a part of Dodge in the early 1980s. One of the first products to emerge with the Ram name associated was the 1981 full-size Dodge Ram pick-up truck. But Dodge had been making trucks since the mid-1900s, so this wasn’t their first rodeo. The Dodge Ram didn’t lack for power either, with the 1981 models having three different engine choices for drivers to choose from. Besides power, the first generation of Dodge Rams sported the now-iconic Ram hood ornament, which helped it stand out from the crowd.

Other than that, the design for the Dodge Ram truck was nearly identical to Dodge’s previous D-series trucks, save for larger head and tail lamps and more defined lines. However, since trucks were becoming more popular as all-purpose vehicles, the interior was updated to include a more comfortable bench seat, along with a more driver-friendly gauge panel clearly displaying the truck’s speed and fuel levels. Plus, other amenities like cruise control, AC, power locks and doors, and a radio/stereo with cassette player, meant the new Ram truck did double duty as a work and play vehicle.

The truck stayed mostly the same until the early '90s, when it received a refresh that not only included slight tweaks to the grille and exterior design but also meant a new range of engines for drivers to pick from. This led to an uptick in Dodge Ram sales, with the Cummins engine being recognized as one of the key factors.

In 1994 the Dodge Ram saw changes yet again when Dodge released its top to bottom redesign, which by '90s standards was considered cutting-edge. The second-generation Dodge Rams were considered a success, with the truck even being featured in a blockbuster film, Twister. The second generation of Ram trucks saw an increase in sales throughout the rest of the '90s until competitors Ford and GM heightened the competition, which made it increasingly difficult for the Dodge Ram to stay on top. In order to compete, Dodge released the Dodge Ram’s 3rd generation in 2001 with all new features and refreshing updates.

The 3rd generation of Ram trucks included everything from a newly designed frame, new powertrain, and suspension to an updated modern interior for the new millennium. The new face of the Dodge Ram boosted sales once more to an all-time high. However, one thing that kept the Dodge Ram trailing the giants like Ford’s F-150 was the lack of a crew cab feature, so in 2006 Dodge decided to change that. The Dodge Ram Mega Cab was created to give drivers extra cargo space while seating up to six passengers at a time.

Never one to slow down, the 4th generation of Ram was introduced to truck drivers in 2008 as a 2009 model. This new model also marked the split of Dodge and Ram into two separate entities under the FCA umbrella. While Dodge’s focus became cars, Ram continued to concentrate on trucks. Still under the same parent corporation, the Ram truck was given a facelift in 2009 with a 4-door cab which later replaced the Mega Cab option for the Ram 1500 model. A new Hemi engine gave the Ram an extra boost of power that drivers were looking for.

Since then, Ram has continued to prove it can hold its own against some pretty steep competition. The truck is often noted as one of the most popular truck brands on the market, being named America’s 3rd best-selling truck in 2020. With its ability to remain flexible, it’s no mystery why when truck drivers across the globe need power and reliability out of their truck; they choose Ram.
