The Dodge brand goes back more than 100 years and has often been the premier name in American auto manufacturing when you are looking for raw power and pure muscle in a car. Founded in 1900 as the Dodge Brothers Company, they started by providing car parts and assemblies for other manufacturers in the Detroit area, such as Ford. In 1914, they started building their own complete vehicles under the name “Dodge Brothers,” which means they were making cars even before their eventual parent company – Chrysler – was doing so. Sadly, the two Dodge brothers who founded the company both died in 1920 – the first in January and the other in December, leaving the company in the hands of their family.
In the years that followed, the Dodge Brothers company floundered a bit without its original leadership – though it became a leader in making light trucks, its market share dwindled over time. By 1927, Dodge Brothers sales were 13th in the US auto industry, and in 1928, they were purchased by Chrysler, becoming a division of the new Chrysler Corporation. In the years and decades that followed, Chrysler’s leadership worked to figure out where, exactly, Dodge fit into its lineup of brands alongside Plymouth, DeSoto, and others.
Following World War II, Dodge’s designers and engineers worked hard to figure out what the Dodge brand would come to represent. Innovations like the luxurious styling of the Dodge Coronet models and the introduction of their first V8 engine – the Red Ram Hemi – pushed the company closer to what we know today. Dodge continued to find success throughout the 1960s with the Coronet and the introduction of the Lancer before introducing the Dodge Charger in the mid-'60s and racing further toward the modern lineup.
Although difficult, Dodge weathered the storm of the 1970s Oil Crisis and emerged into the 1980s with a wide range of options, including cars, trucks, and even a minivan. Throughout the 1990s, Dodge continued to grow and find its place with numerous options available, including the increasingly-popular Dodge Ram pickup. In recent years, there has been a renewed effort to find a more meaningful place for the Dodge brand, and it has become a leader in performance and taken its place as the premier name in American muscle. To truly cement this, Ram became its own truck brand in 2010, and the Dodge name has been synonymous with “performance” ever since.
Today, only three Dodge models remain available, representing incredible levels of power and performance in cars and an SUV. An SUV might not sound like what you would expect from a brand committed to performance and muscle, but it is a model quite unlike what you will find from most other companies. The Dodge Durango is a three-row SUV with three different engines available, giving you incredible power with seating for up to seven people.
This kind of “out of the box” thinking is exactly what Dodge delivers on every model, giving you something special that you will not find elsewhere. For example, the Dodge Charger is a muscle car through and through, but it is also a four-door model with a surprisingly spacious rear seat. With the Dodge Challenger, you get a two-door muscle car much like you would expect, but it also features rear-wheel drive, making it remarkable among other performance vehicles. All three of these models have unique aspects that truly set them apart from models you will find from other brands while having some of the most exhilarating engines out there. Consider the most powerful engines available on each model:
You can see that this is power well beyond what you will find elsewhere and really demonstrates what you can expect from Dodge.
As we saw when we looked at the legendary reputation of the Dodge brand, they have been making incredible vehicles for generations.
