Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center

Located near Watford City, The Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center is a state historic site marking the meeting of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers. The site memorializes Lewis and Clark’s passage through the area in 1805 with murals in the rotunda. There’s a museum, along with campsites, picnic areas, hiking trails, and breathtaking views from atop the river bluffs.

Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site

Take a trip back to the 19th century, when Fort Union in Williston was the most important fur trading post in the region. Eight Northern Plains Native American tribes traded buffalo robes and other furs from around the world. Today, it’s a National Historic Site. Take a self-guided tour of the trade house and museum filled with centuries of artifacts, or wander the hiking trails. Special events like the annual Indian Arts Showcase and PowWow and a traditional Wacipi honor the Northern Plains tribes.

James Memorial Art Center

Located in Williston’s original library building, the James Memorial Art Center preserves the historic building while sharing art with the community through events like their annual Art Fest, Warm Up After Light Up to welcome the holiday season, and Edgar Allan Poe Reading Night for Halloween. They feature live acoustic music on the third Friday of the month, and offer art classes and exhibits year-round.

Miss North Dakota Scholarship Pageant

Once a year the best and brightest young women in North Dakota converge on Williston to compete for scholarship money and the crown in the Miss North Dakota Scholarship Pageant. The winner represents the state in the Miss America competition. Catch the glamour every June at Bakken Auditorium.
