How Do I Check Tire Tread Wear?

Close-up of a man checking the tread on car with a gauge

Your tires do not necessarily wear at the same rate all the time. Many of our Stanley customers are surprised at times to find their tires have worn down much earlier than expected. That’s why it’s important to check your tire tread on a regular basis. “But, how do I check tire tread wear?” you may ask. It’s easy. If you’ve got a ruler or a penny, you’re good to go! The service department at Ryan Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Williston wants to help you keep your tires in the best shape, so we’ve put together this handy guide.

How Do I Check Tire Tread Wear with a Ruler?

Checking your tire tread wear with a ruler is the most accurate method. The tread of your tires should not go below 2/32 of an inch. Here’s how to check your tire tread this way:

  1. Draw a line across your ruler at 2/32 of an inch for easy reference.
  2. Stick the ruler between the treads at multiple places on each of your tires.
  3. If you see the line above your tread, schedule an appointment to get your tires replaced.

How Do I Check Tire Tread Wear with a Penny?

If you don’t have a ruler handy, a penny will do in a pinch. Here’s how to check your tire tread wear with a penny:

  1. Turn the penny upside down with “heads” facing you.
  2. Stick the penny that way (Lincoln’s head pointing down) in between the treads. Do this in multiple spots on each tire.
  3. If Lincoln’s entire face is visible above the treads, it’s time to replace your tires.

What Can I Do to Reduce Wear and Tear on My Tires?

You can get a longer life out of your tire if you do the following while driving along our Watford City roads:

  • Give yourself enough time to roll to a stop gradually instead of suddenly applying brakes.
  • Accelerate gently.
  • Take curves at a safe speed.
  • Rotate your tires regularly.
  • Keep your tires inflated to the proper level.
